Dear Sir or Madam,

I write this to you with great hope. My name is Jorge Gonzalez, I am a 33 year old U.S. Citizen and a Leukemia patient battling cancer for more than two years.

I simply ask that you read this letter with an open mind and more importantly, an open heart. Without the help of others, people like you, I wouldn’t be here.

This is my story … I was diagnosed on July 6, 2007 with Acute Mylegenous Leukemia: Cancer of the blood. I’ve had a rough ride to say the least, from being in a coma, on life support, fed through a tube and having a tracheotomy, to relearning how to walk, breathe and talk. In 2007, after I was diagnosed, I completed five months of chemotherapy and was Cancer free.

After three months of being healthy, I relapsed in March 2008 and had two additional chemotherapy treatments, which prepared me for a bone marrow transplant at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL in August 2008. After the transplant, I was once again Cancer free for six months. Unfortunately, in March 2009, the Cancer returned. Since then, I’ve completed various chemotherapy treatments with no success.

At the moment I find myself in the toughest battle to date in obtaining Medicare through the Social Security Department. I’ve been disabled for more than two years, unable to work, which should make me eligible according to all Medicare, Social Security, Health & Human Services agency websites. One site, www.socialsecurity.gov, reads "If you are under age 65 and disabled, and have been entitled to disability benefits under Social Security … for 24 months, you will be automatically entitled to Medicare Part A and Part B beginning the 25th month of disability benefit entitlement." I am on my 26th month, and have been told, by the Social Security Department, that I’m not eligible. I’ve been pointed in several directions from various agencies, yet I have not found a solution.

MD Anderson Cancer Center, a world-class facility in Houston, TX, is willing to open their doors and try a new treatment on me - one transfusion of cord-blood, a second bone marrow transplant and additional chemotherapy. The doors will open as soon as I obtain Medicare. Without this, I'm simply out of luck. Without Medicare, this life-saving procedure will cost at minimum, $500,000. I’m strong enough to travel to Houston and receive this treatment. I simply don’t have the money to pay for it.

My will to live is stronger than any obstacle I have ever faced or those to come. I have a loving wife who has fought this battle alongside me, my nieces and nephew who bring a smile to my face every day, a tireless mother and brother who are always there to help and a group of amazing friends and family who keep me going.

Time is not on my side and sadly, if I wait until January 2010, when the Social Security Department states I will be eligible, I surely will not survive. I thank you in advance and offer my deepest gratitude for any assistance you are able to provide.

Escribo esto con mucha esperanza. Mi nombre es Jorge Gonzalez, tengo 33 años, soy ciudadano americano y he luchado contra el Cáncer por los últimos dos años. Simplemente pido que lean esto con una mente abierta, pero mas que nada con el corazón. Sin la ayuda de gente como ustedes, simplemente nada de esto seria posible.

Esta es mi historia: fui diagnosticado con Leucemia (Cáncer en la sangre) el 6 de Julio del 2007. Ha sido un camino difícil, desde haber estado en coma, alimentado por un tubo pasando por una traqueotomía, hasta tener que volver a aprender a caminar, respirar y hablar. En diciembre del 2007, complete 5 meses de tratamientos de quimioterapia que me llevaron a la completa
remisión, es decir, libre de Cáncer.

En Marzo 2008 recaí, tuve dos tratamientos mas de quimioterapia que me prepararon para un transplante de medula en Moffitt Cancer Center, en Tampa FL en Agosto 2008. Después del transplante otra vez estuve en remisión por 6 meses, pero desafortunadamente en Marzo del 2009 el Cáncer regreso. Desde entonces hasta la fecha, he completado varios tratamientos de
quimioterapia y medicamentos sin ningún éxito.

En este momento, me encuentro en la batalla mas dura que he tenido con el Departamento del Seguro Social para obtener el Medicare. He estado deshabilitado por los últimos dos años sin poder trabajar, y acuerdo con las agencias del seguro social, medicare y servicios humanos; debería ser elegible para obtener los beneficios de Medicare. El sitio www.socialsecurity.gov dice
que: “ para aquellos menores de 65 años que han recibido servicios del seguro social por incapacidad por 24 meses, los beneficios empezaran en el mes 25.” Ahora me encuentro en el mes numero 26, y el Departamento del Seguro Social dice que todavía no soy elegible para estos beneficios. Diferentes respuestas de varias agencias me dejan sin ningún tipo de solución.

El hospital M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, en Houston TX esta dispuesto a abrirme sus puertas para hacerme un nuevo tratamiento: un segundo transplante usando células de un cordón umbilical además de las células de un donante y mas quimioterapia. Las puertas se abrirían en cuanto obtenga el Medicare, sin esto, parece simplemente imposible. Sin Medicare, los costos de este procedimiento que puede salvar mi vida serian de un mínimo de $500,000.00. Yo tengo la fuerza para viajar a Houston y recibir este tratamiento, pero simplemente no puedo pagarlo.

Mis ganas de vivir son mas fuertes que cualquier obstáculo que se me presente o los que estén por venir. Tengo una esposa que amo y que ha luchado esta batalla junto conmigo, mis sobrinos que siempre me dan una sonrisa, una madre incansable y un hermano que siempre están dispuestos a ayudarme, una familia y un increíble grupo de amigos que me motivan siempre a seguir adelante.

Desafortunadamente el tiempo no esta de mi lado, si me espero hasta Enero del 2010 cuando el Departamento del Seguro Social indica que seria elegible para los beneficios que necesito, seguramente no sobreviviré. Les agradezco de antemano con profunda gratitud cualquier ayuda que me puedan brindar.
